Understand roles and permissions in your Space

See how the Owner, Moderator, and Member roles control access in a Space while custom roles are in development.

Roles decide what each person is allowed to do in your Space. Today every Space uses three built-in roles, and a custom role builder with granular permission controls is marked as coming soon on the Roles page. Because access is shaped by both roles and paid access rules, keep Manage memberships, credits, and gated content nearby when you troubleshoot member access.

Before you start

  • You need to be the Space owner with role management access to open the Roles page.
  • The three built-in roles are Owner, Moderator, and Member; they cannot be edited yet.
  • Member access is also shaped by membership tier, so check both when someone is missing a feature.

Review roles in your Space

  1. Open Settings > Community > Roles.
  2. Read the description for each built-in role: Owner has full control over the Space, Moderator can manage content and members, and Member has standard access to Space content.
  3. Note the banner on this page: custom roles that control who can post, moderate, and access paid content are coming soon, so the role list is currently read-only.

Check what members can access

  1. Open Settings > Community > Members to see everyone with a profile in your Space.
  2. Use the search box to find a member by username.
  3. Open the preview for a member to see their membership tier, subscription status, profile count, and member-since date.

Expected result

You know which built-in role grants which level of control, and you can confirm any member's tier and status from the Members page while custom roles remain in development.

Troubleshooting

  • If the Roles page is missing from your sidebar, your account is not the Space owner or lacks role management access.
  • If a member cannot reach a feature, check their membership tier and subscription status in the member preview, not only their role; Manage members, roles, moderation, reports, and community credits covers the broader review flow.
  • If you need a permission split the built-in roles do not cover, watch the Roles page for the custom roles release.
